With technology constantly changing, it can be hard for some to keep up with the latest gizmos and gadgets. However, even the most technologically challenged can tell that tablets and laptops seem to be the in thing right about now. It is a fact that more and more individuals, businesspersons and casual consumers, are relying on such devices in order to get the job done.

It seems that these items are hot…literally.

Overheating is something that no one wants to deal with when it comes to laptops and tablets, but the fact of the matter is that it can happen. Just take the iPad 4 for example. Apple’s latest tablet caused quite an uproar earlier this year when consumers started complaining about it burning their laps. According to Yahoo! News, the device’s surface can reach 116 degrees Fahrenheit whenever it is plugged in and running graphics-intensive games. This is a 12-degree increase from the iPad 2. This is also a problem.

It should be noted that 116 degrees isn’t scorching. Still, that is pretty warm. However, tablets aren’t the only electronic devices prone to getting hot. Some laptop computers can have the same exact problem. In 2010, 535,000 of Sony’s Vaio F and C series laptops were prone to overheating thanks to a software bug. According to Computerworld, the company asked a total of 646,000 owners to update their machines in order to avoid the problem. Sony isn’t the only one with the issue. Other brands are even prone to frying video cards. A recent report in the Los Angeles Times revealed that overheating laptops may also affect male fertility. Researchers used thermometers on over twenty healthy male volunteers who balanced a laptop on their knees. Yikes.

So, what’s the deal? As technologically advanced as these companies are, why is overheating an issue? Why haven’t they found a way to get rid of it? It’s definitely a question worth asking. It’s also a problem worth trying to solve. According to Bloomberg, Apple was sued over claims that the iPad was getting a bit too hot. The complaint that was filed states that the iPad “does not live up to the reasonable consumer’s expectations created by Apple” because it “overheats so quickly under common weather conditions.” Perhaps Apple should try to rectify this issue. Maybe Google will have better luck when they release their upcoming tablet.

In the meantime, there are some ways to keep laptops from getting too hot. For starters, it would be wise to keep a laptop on a flat surface to increase airflow. Also, shutting down the laptop before placing it in a carrying bag may also be ideal. Experts also suggest unplugging the charger as soon as the battery is full. The constant source of electricity will heat the battery, and, in turn, overheat the computer. Individuals can also try sticking their computers in the freezer…although that’s not something that HostDime is endorsing.

Apple’s overheating issues aren’t the first and probably won’t be the last. Still, there has to be a way to eradicate this problem indefinitely. As popular as these items are, it may be wise for companies to try to appease their customers. Maybe a built in air conditioning unit perhaps?

Now, that’s hot.

With Google recently dominating the news, it comes as a breath of fresh air that Apple is making headlines again. According to PC Magazine, Foxconn, Apple’s Asian manufacturing partner, is set to assemble the new high-definition Apple television set. It seems Samsung and Sony are about to have some serious competition. Though development and manufacturing hasn’t quite begun yet, details about it are starting to trickle out.

In addition to being able to stream multiple channels like any other flat screen television, the, um, iTV, will also feature an aluminum body, FaceTime video calling, and the voice-activated virtual assistant Siri. Clearly the folks at Apple are going for the ultramodern approach. Reports found on Mashable indicate that Apple is waiting until it signs contracts with major Hollywood studios before releasing the television to the masses. More than likely, the TV should be available for customers in 2013 or 2014.

So, what does this mean for television manufacturers such as Samsung, Toshiba and Magnavox?

Well, perhaps it means they need to step their games up. It’s no secret that Apple has the Midas touch when it comes to their projects. Consumers seem to trust them when it comes to the latest in entertainment technology and even their methods on improving education. However, this isn’t the first time that someone has tried to spruce up the way individuals watch TV. The future of television has been a topic for industry competitors and researchers for a while now, and other top notch companies like Google, are trying to make some headway. Smart TVs, sets that integrate the Internet into normal television viewing, seems to be where we are headed.

When reviewing data from a 2011 survey done by Nielsen, Erick Schonfeld from TechCrunch stated that “Americans spend an average of 32 hours and 47 minutes a week watching traditional TV. They only spend an average of three hours and 58 minutes a week on the Internet, and only 27 minutes a week watching video online. All those billions of videos watched online still only represent 1.4 percent of the time spent watching traditional TV.”

It is what it is. Apple’s upcoming TV will undoubtedly turn heads. We’ll just have to wait a little longer until we can experience it. Until then, perhaps it would be wise to stay busy with one of their other numerous products. After all, the company certainly knows a thing or two about staying fresh.

Now how about those apples?

Are you excited about Apple’s new iTV? Do you think SmartTVs are here to stay? Do you have any experience with them so far? Can’t we all just get along?

Perhaps that’s a question that the minds at Google may be pondering. It has recently been reported that the company wants a mistrial in their ongoing legal feud with Oracle. It turns out that Oracle took the search giant to court in regards to them believing that Google violated copyrights related to its Java API package back in 2010. According to CNET, Google’s request was supplemented by a formal proposal to the court asking it to “declare a mistrial” in order to bring in a new court proceeding.

It seems the battle isn’t over just yet. Reports also indicate that Oracle has also filed papers and requested that the court make its own determination regarding whether or not Google violated fair use with the 37 Java API packages. According to Mashable, a jury on Monday turned in the first big verdict in the dispute between Google and Oracle. It seems that the jury found that Google did infringe on Oracle’s copyrights over the Java code. However, they didn’t rule on whether or not the actions of Google could be considered “fair use.”

Nevertheless, the judge in the case has stated that he’ll make a further ruling concerning that point — which could essentially change the outcome with a final decision regarding whether or not software application programming interfaces, or API’s, can be copyrighted. API’s, of course, are used in smart phone apps, some of which can be helpful for web hosting. As of how the verdict currently stands, Google’s violation would cost the company up to $150,000 — an amount that definitely won’t cause a dent. It was reported that Oracle sought $1 billion in damages.

Oracle’s core argument appears to be that Google should have merely obtained a Java license. Perhaps then all of this court nonsense would have been avoided. Still, Google isn’t going down without a fight and, according to Mashable, is continuing to emphasize the point that “infringement and fair use are two sides of the same coin.”

Google is resolute in going forward with a retrial. Their statement to the court makes that very clear.

“Please take notice that pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 591 Defendant Google Inc. (‘Google’) will, and hereby does, respectfully move for a new trial on Oracle’s claim that Google is liable for infringement of Oracle’s copyright on the structure, sequence and organization of the compilable code for the 37 Java API packages,” Google wrote to the court. “This Motion is based on the attached memorandum of points and authorities as well as the entire record in this matter.”

Those are fighting words right there. Nevertheless, cases like these do tend to take time. Still, $150,000 is not a lot of money…at least by Google standards. Why won’t Google just fork it over and be done with it? Is it a pride thing? Perhaps that’s something to consider.

Either way, make no doubt about it, the order is definitely in the court.

What do you think about Google being taken to court? Do you believe they should just pay Oracle? Let us know by sharing your comments in the box below, or by sounding off on our Facebook Page or Google+ Page, or by tweeting us at @HostDime.

We all know that when it comes to social networking, Facebook and Google+ seem to be where it’s at. In fact, it’s even been proven that both are pretty good for business. However, with those two prevalent forms of social media, along with Twitter, continuing to be dominant, other social networking sites are being kicked to the curb. Perhaps it pays to know what else is out there. To that end, here is the lowdown on three social networking sites that you may have heard of, but never took the liberty to visit…

Bebo – Now, here’s one that may be of some interest. It actually has something in common with Facebook…its own version of Timeline. Although, it’s tough to say which Timeline came first, Bebo was launched in June 2005. Bebo stands for blog early, blog often, and it has sites all over the world including the US, UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, France and other areas. One of the things that the site is known for is its esteemed Lifestream Platform that delivers real-time chronological updates from friends that may be on Facebook, Myspace, YouTube, Flickr, Twitter and Delicious. In all honesty, Bebo seems to be a poor man’s version of Facebook, but its hip design and nifty look does boast appeal.

Tagged – A social discovery website based in California, Tagged was founded in 2004 and is noted for its ability to have been able to grow profitably during the up rise of Facebook. Touted as, “The Social Network for Meeting New People,” Tagged connects individuals through social games, friend suggestions, profile browsing, group interests and more. What makes it unique is that while other forms of social media typically focus on establishing relationships, Tagged seems to be all about the category of social discovery. It currently has over 300 million members worldwide, and in 2010, Inc., a prevalent business magazine, named it one of the 500 fastest growing private companies.

Yammer – Launched in September 2008, Yammer is an enterprise social network for private communication within organizations or between pre-designated groups. Think of it as a private version of Twitter for businesspersons. Yammer is actually used by more than 200,000 companies worldwide and is essentially one of the fastest growing enterprise software companies in history, exceeding over four million users in just three years. It is a fact that more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 use Yammer for business.

And there you have it. While following the norm can be nice, sometimes it may be good to see what’s out there. Sure, Facebook and Twitter can be useful when it comes to the rules of social engagement, but there are others that are just as good. Exploring other options can be good for business.

Perchance it would help to make it your own, and do so yourself.

Have you ever heard of any of these three social networking sites? Do you use any of them? Let us know by sharing your comments in the box below, or by sounding off on our Facebook Page or Google+ Page, or by tweeting us at @HostDime.

Okay, so being fairly new to the world of technology and web hosting, I was equally interested and perplexed when Google unveiled their highly anticipated Google Drive last week. It seemed that practically everyone was going crazy over this new thingamajig. Not that that’s surprising. After all, whenever Google unveils something new, such as Account Activity, businesspersons and nerds alike tend to lose their minds. It’s just something that I’ve noticed.

So, fascinated by the substantial affect that this news was having on corporate professionals and computer savvy individuals, I decided to take to Yahoo to learn just what the Google Drive is all about. As someone that works in web hosting, it’s been a real pleasure observing the new technology crazes as they hit. Apparently cloud-based file storage is a big deal when it comes to some people nowadays, and Google’s new storage services are now facing heavy competition from rivals Microsoft, Amazon, Dropbox, and…drum roll please… Apple. Now, that could be a problem.

However, there is one good thing that Google has working in its favor — pricing. Then again, perhaps it depends on the size of a person’s wallets. According to Mashable, the annual price for the Google Drive — $30 — is more than what Amazon and Microsoft charge for an additional 20GB, but less than the price of Dropbox, Apple and Box.net. Reports found on The Globe and Mail state that Microsoft attempted to sway customers from Google with an update to their SkyDrive cloud service. Its new feature was created in Windows Explorer and gives individuals remote access to their main PC in addition to being able stream video from it — which is something that Google Drive simply cannot do.

Here’s a question worth pondering, and it’s one that I wouldn’t mind having answered — why do people need all of this? Seriously. I suppose one good thing that could come from all of this is that the cloud is usable on multiple platforms. This is undoubtedly good for businesspersons on the go. The fact of the matter is that work and home are blending. More and more people with jobs are either working from home or simply taking their work with them wherever they go. With the cloud being able to be utilized on the iPad, home PCs and work laptops, more and more people are relying on it. Perhaps this will continue to prove true for Google Drive and its competitors.

Microsoft offers the first 7Gb is free and it offers 50Gb of cloud-based storage for $25 a year. I don’t really have anything to store. I’m not into baggage. However, if I was into cloud-based file storing, those tidbits would sound pretty ideal. While Microsoft is certain a contender, the buzz is still circling around Google especially with CNET reporting that Google Drive is coming to Chrome OS. It’s no secret that Chromebook previously suffered from storage systems that were isolated from the cloud. However, the browser-based operating system is now integrated with Google’s online file sync service. Some are even calling this the dawn of the new PC. Perchance it is.

Then again, what do I know? I’m still learning. Perhaps my judgment is, um, cloudy.

The world of business has always been a constantly evolving one. The average businessperson is now hardly ever relegated to their office. On the contrary, most corporate professionals and entrepreneurs are on the go. To that end, they tend to utilize the best in what technology has to offer — whether it is in communication or even web hosting. Lately, smartphones, tablets and laptops have been playing a key role in business activities — and it doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.

Just ask the folks at Apple. After Mac computers succumbed to not one, but two vicious virus attacks earlier this month, the former wiping out 600,000 computers, the company is back in the news again — this time for a more positive reason. Apple has now announced that their next edition of their beloved iPhone will be made of LiquidMetal, a revolutionary class of patented alloy. According to Mashable, the device will be available in October and will have a totally redesigned body. Furthermore, it will also run on 4G data networks such as LTE.

Pretty cool, right?

Reports found on InformationWeek state that Apple spent $30 million acquiring the rights to use LiquidMetal back in 2010. So far, the remarkable substance has only been used in small objects, such as the SIM ejector tool that ships with the iPhone and a few iPads. The alloy is made of copper, nickel, titanium, zirconium and other materials that have been put through a patented bonding process.

One word — wow.

This new phone will no doubt sell fast and will probably be a useful tool for businesspersons on the go. Why wouldn’t it be? With as many features as iPhones usually have, the iPhone 5 will of course come loaded with more — including all of the typical apps that businessmen and businesswomen love and adore. It seems to be an accepted fact that apps are indeed a dime a dozen. In fact, they’ve now become something of a trend. However, with as many businesspersons out their finding custom made apps for their own respective businesses, are the individuals in the web hosting profession having the same luck?

Performancing, a media company focused on digital marketing and branding needs, recently compiled a list of 10 Android apps for individuals interested in web hosting. While none of them are on the iPhone, it could certainly be a step in the right direction. Among the list of choices that they compiled were Magic Color Picker, an app that helps website designers choose the right color theory for their page; HTML Cheat Sheet, an app that helps people remember various HTML tags on the go; Server Density which helps web host providers keep track of their server’s load average — which, for HostDime, would be our fully managed dedicated server hosting, or practically anything found in our datacenter — memory usages and running processes, and Google Analytics enabling people to examine all aspects of their website’s traffic.

So, perhaps there is a little light at the end of the tunnel. The fact of the matter is that times are definitely changing. Whether a person is into web hosting or baking, it pays to keep up. To that end, perchance it’s ideal to have the latest in tablets and smartphones.

Keeping up with the Joneses has never been so pivotal.

Just when you thought it was safe to log back on to your Apple computer after this month’s previous virus scare, it seems that maybe it isn’t. According to the Herald Sun, another Mac Trojan virus has been discovered, and this one has been infecting Apple computers via a Java plug-in. It seems to be spreading across computers when individuals open their respective emails with links leading them to vicious malware. The newest virus has been christened “SabPub,” an abbreviation of its official name, “Backdoor.OSX.SapPUb.” Researchers and experts are saying this new threat has the potential to taint more Mac computers than the one that infected over 600,000 earlier this month.

Do you hear that sudden rush of wind? That’s the sound of the folks at Apple breathing a collective sigh of frustration.

It’s no secret that Apple prided itself on not being susceptible to virus attacks. In fact, that’s one of the things that the company is known for. Two attacks in one month isn’t looking so good for their squeaky clean reputation. However, information found on Mashable states that although some Mac users may believe they are safe from viruses and such, there were actually about 300 variants of Mac malware that had been detected before 2012. Now, 70 have been detected in just the past three months.

That’s a problem.

So, with two new viruses attacking Apple computers, it does beg the question on whether or not Apple is fixing things fast enough. Security is always of paramount importance – whether it be for individuals that casually surf the Internet or for those that have their own businesses. HostDime actually has a dedicated server security audit in an effort to provide peace of mind to clients, which is something that individuals with Apple computers probably want. InformationWeek stated that there are a few similarities with the two viruses. For starters, they both exploit the same drive-by Java vulnerability and they both are designed to add in infected Macs to the command and control server for a botnet.

However, despite the similarities, there are differences. In an interview with Mashable, Alex Gostev, the chief security expert of Kaspersky Lab, an anti-virus software provider, said that the new virus spreads in a more effective way.

“The Flashback and the SabPub Trojans are totally different,” Gostev said. “SabPub is classic backdoor Trojan, so it opens full access to a victim’s system for attackers. Flashback and its known variants is downloader and clickjacking bot, which means it conducts click fraud scam by hijacking people’s search engine results inside their web browsers.”

So, there’s that. Either way, it isn’t looking so good for Apple. Perhaps it’s time to bring in the pesticide.

After all, who wants fruit when it isn’t fresh?

What do you think of the second virus this month to attack Apple computers? Do you prefer PC computers or Mac computers? Let us know by sharing your comments in the box below, or by sounding off on our Facebook Page or Google+ Page, or by tweeting us at @HostDime.

In this economy, the word ‘free’ can hold a certain kind of significance for some individuals. With wallets getting tighter and penny pinching becoming the norm, it helps to be able to get items at a discounted price. However, does the same apply to finding a web host? Now, there’s a million dollar question. It is a fact that web hosting is a booming enterprise. With more and more people looking to launch their own respective websites for business or personal use, web hosting providers are thriving. While having free web hosting can be good for those that are on a budget, there are some disadvantages that consumers may not be aware of. To that end, it helps to be informed.

For starters, how would you like to see a dozen advertisements on your page? Well, that’s one thing that free hosting is known for. They have to get paid somehow, right? It’s common knowledge that too many ads can distract a person when they are on a website along with certain colors which is something to consider in color theory for web design. Advertisements can become jangled up and that’s something that the folks hosting your website for free may not care about. In addition to this, reliability can also be an issue. With it being free and all, there really isn’t any certified obligation to serve a user’s needs.

Marcos Font, who serves as the Dedicated Service Supervisor for HostDime, said reliability is definitely something to consider when thinking of free web hosting. He said that’s a big difference when it comes to paid hosting versus free hosting.

“Most times, with free hosting, you have no guarantee of uptime nor support in the event that an issue may arise,” said Font, who has been with the company for six years. “With paid hosting, you are paying for a certain service which you are guaranteed. Should you receive less service than that guarantee, you can either get a credit or refund from your host.”

Dan Silber is of the same opinion. As the Vice President of Sales for HostDime, Silber said that consumers can’t really expect a lot when they’re paying nothing.

“You have to keep in mind how much you’re paying when you need support,” said Silber who has been with HostDime since 2007. “How much you’re paying when you outgrow the free model of hosting and need to upgrade. Will they be there when you need to upgrade to a dedicated server? Will they be able to help you transfer there? Do they even have the infrastructure in place to offer this? No one should be using a free host for a business or website that they rely on for their income.”

With that being said, there’s also something else to consider with free hosting — the limited amount of hard drive space. With a HostDime package, customers can get in-house support along with generous amounts of space and can always upgrade to a larger package. Our datacenter has multiple types of server configurations to meet the needs of consumers along with a variety of web hosting packages including ones for business hosting and reseller hosting. There are advantages to having paid hosting, and Font said it may be smart to jump on board — especially with HostDime.

“We’re a host that privately owns our own datacenter, versus thousands of other hosts which rent space from a datacenter provider,” Font said.”With going for an actual datacenter owner versus a reseller, you have quicker access to support and quicker support resolution turn around. If you host with someone who is a reseller, they would have to contact their host for a resolution then would have to get back to you. With HostDime, there is no middle man. You are dealing with the man.”
